On this day in 1955, Disneyland opens in Anaheim, California. The theme park took $17 million to build. The owner, Walt Disney wanted to build an amusement park where it was both educational and entertaining for both adults and their children. The opening of Disneyland was a disaster as it was planned to be a soft opening with 15,000 people. However, the tickets were counterfeited and over 28,000 people showed up. Since the park was not ready for a high volume of guests, the park ran out of food and drinks, a women’s shoe got stuck in wet asphalt, and the Mark Twain Steamboat almost capsized. Despite this disaster of a start, Disneyland recovered and accumulated a million visitors within a week. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• FOLLOW!! for more interesting facts like this one ❤️ •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• 1 hour ago by @everydayhistoryfacts

It makes me sad that when you think about Sarah McLachlan, the first thing you think of is that devastating SPCA commercial. The one you have to switch off immediately and strangely airs frequently during Comedy Central’s daytime lineup. When I think of Sarah McLachlan, the first thing I think of is her ingenious creation, Lilith Fair, the first real concert I ever saw with my Aunt Donna and my sister. In an industry that overwhelming still leans heavily on booking male acts, it was created to honor women in music. The Columbus venue they played was the now defunct Polaris (or Germain) Amphitheatre. A lovely collegiate journalist, Karissa Shively, wrote in her 1998 Lantern article, “Yes, the concert was entertaining, there were some great deals on toe rings and t-shirts, but there is a deeper message behind this gathering called the Lilith Fair, which celebrates women in music.” I remember feeling overwhelmed at the amount of people Polaris could contain, and the fact that I could go someplace to hear the music I listened to on the radio played live. Jewel actually stood on stage in the distance and strummed the songs my sister would play from her CD and boombox when she would seclude herself in the bath for a few hours during the thick of her teenage years. A few years later, I would copy her, hoping that listening to a woman singing directly and honestly about her experiences would soothe the intensity of my hormones and emotions through girlhood. They always did. I have my Aunt to thank for prioritizing live music in life. She always let me listen to music so much louder than my parents did and she provided us with some of the beautiful memories I have of this place. Polaris was lost to the downtown revival with places like Express Live! in 2007, one Youtube video calling it, ‘suburban decay’. Today an Ikea sits on the land where the amphitheatre once stood. Andy and I went last year, 20 years after Lilith Fair was held to wander aimlessly, like a million other couples around the world, for some things we needed for our new house. The smell of cheap beer and weed replaced by Swedish meatballs. 3 hours ago by @614nostalgia

The Most Terrifying Sounds of The Second World War, Part 3 Junkers Ju 87 & Artillery Fire Support. Junkers Ju 87. The Junkers Ju 87 or Stuka, was a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft. Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, it first flew in 1935. The Ju 87 made its combat debut in 1937 with the Luftwaffe's Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War and served the Axis forces in World War II. The aircraft was easily recognisable by its inverted gull wings and fixed spatted undercarriage. Upon the leading edges of its faired main gear legs were mounted the Jericho-Trompete (Jericho trumpet) wailing sirens, becoming the propaganda symbol of German air power and the so-called blitzkriegvictories of 1939–1942. Artillery Fire Support. Artillery is a class of heavy military ranged weapons built to launch munitions far beyond the range and power of infantry's small arms. Early artillery development focused on the ability to breach defensive walls and fortifications during sieges, and led to heavy, fairly immobile siege engines. In its earliest sense, the word artillery referred to any group of soldiers primarily armed with some form of manufactured weapon or armour. Since the introduction of gunpowder and cannon, the word "artillery" has largely meant cannon, and in contemporary usage, it usually refers to shell-firing guns, howitzers, mortars, and rocket artillery. • 👉Follow | @heatshells ✅ • Credit: Flying Dutchman Source: Wikipedia.org • #heatshells #heatshellstanks #heatshellsaviation #historical   #war   #axis   #allies #historymemes #historyfacts #historyinpictures #ww2   #worldwar2 #history #stuka #junkersju87 #artillery 4 hours ago by @heatshells

The Most Terrifying Sounds of The Second World War, Part 2. The Nebelwerfer & V-1 Flying Bomb. The Nebelwerfer. Was a Smoke Mortar, they were initially developed by and assigned to the Wehrmacht's "smoke troops" (Nebeltruppen). This weapon was given its name as a disinformationstrategy designed to fool observers from the League of Nations, who were observing any possible infraction of the Treaty of Versailles, into thinking that it was merely a device for creating a smoke screen. They were primarily intended to deliver poison gas and smoke shells although a high-explosive shell was developed for the Nebelwerfer from the beginning. V-1 Flying Bomb. The V-1 flying bomb —also known to the Allies as the buzz bomb, or doodlebug, and in Germany as Kirschkern or Maikäfer —was an early cruise missile and the only production aircraft to use a pulsejet for power. The V-1 was the first of the so-called "Vengeance weapons" series deployed for the terror bombing of London. • 👉Follow | @heatshells ✅ • Credit: Flying Dutchman Source: Wikipedia.org • #heatshells #heatshellstanks #heatshellsaviation #historical   #war   #axis   #allies #historymemes #historyfacts #historyinpictures #ww2   #worldwar2 #history #nebelwerfer #v1rocket 4 hours ago by @heatshells

The Most Terrifying Sounds of The Second World War, Part 1. Maschinengewehr 42 & Katyusha Rocket Launcher. MG42. The MG 42, Maschinengewehr 42, is a 7.92×57mm Mauser general-purpose machine gun designed in Nazi Germany and used extensively by the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS during the second half of World War II, it was intended to replace the earlier MG 34, which was more expensive and took much longer to produce, but both weapons were produced until the end of World War II. Katyusha Rocket Launcher. The Katyusha multiple rocket launcher is a type of rocket artillery first built and fielded by the Soviet Union in World War II. Multiple rocket launchers such as these deliver explosives to a target area more quickly than conventional artillery, but with lower accuracy and requiring a longer time to reload. • 👉 Follow | @heatshells ✅ • Credit: Flying Dutchman Source: Wikipedia.org • #heatshells #heatshellstanks #heatshellsaviation #historical   #war   #axis   #allies #historymemes #historyfacts #historyinpictures #ww2   #worldwar2 #history #mg42 #katyusha 4 hours ago by @heatshells

Wehrmacht soldiers demonstrating/firing the "Panzerschrek" at some thick steel plates in Germany, 1943. Panzerschreck, Tank Fright. Was the popular name for the Raketenpanzerbüchse 54 ("Rocket Anti-armor Rifle model 54" abbreviated to RPzB 54), an 88 mm calibre reusable anti-tank rocket launcher developed by Nazi Germany in World War II. Another earlier, official common name was Ofenrohr, Stove Pipe. The Panzerschreck was designed as a lightweight infantry anti-tank weapon and was an enlarged copy of the American bazooka. The weapon was shoulder-launched and fired a fin-stabilized rocket with a shaped-charge warhead. It was made in smaller numbers than the Panzerfaust, which was a disposable recoilless gun firing an anti-tank warhead. The Panzerschreck development was initially based on the American bazooka, captured in Tunisia, February 1943. The Panzerschreck was larger and heavier than its American counterpart - the Panzerschreck had an 88 mm calibre, compared to the 60 mm calibre of the bazooka - which meant that it could penetrate thicker armor, but it also produced more smoke when firing. Calibre 88 mm was selected as existing RPzB. Gr. 4312 for 8.8 cm Raketenwerfer 43 was reused for Panzerschreck. Warhead and fuzing was carried over, but the rocket motor's housing needed lengthening from 490 mm (19 in) to 650 mm (26 in) to accommodate the longer rocket motor. • 👉 Follow | @heatshells ✅ • Credit: Panzerargentino Source: Wikipedia.org • #heatshells #heatshellstanks #heatshellsaviation #historical   #war   #axis   #allies #historymemes #historyfacts #historyinpictures #ww2   #worldwar2 #history #panzerschreck #panzer 5 hours ago by @heatshells

I never would've suspected from the quaint and beautiful exterior but this church is actually a refuge for women, that has continued to be a refuge since 1863. It's run by The Merciful Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul, and their mission was and is to help those who need compassion and mercy the most. This organisation, these women that have chosen through the ages to be there, give their loving open hearts to heal and uplift others. . The street that I walked down to see it is nothing special. It's a small laneway that was named Salzachgässchen in 1862. Before then, it probably had either a medieval name, or no name at all, since it's in Mülln, the oldest part of the medieval fortified city. Mülln means Mills, where they milled the grain for the village. . Perhaps what I love most about this place and this street is the obscurness of it. It's exactly how I imagine Salzburg used to be. The quiet and unassuming nature of it gives it this otherworldly charm, where you can almost imagine people with baskets and carts bustling about. It makes you feel strangely at home. Perhaps it's also that for centuries, people were shown kindness and mercy in this street. Where hearts have been opened and poured into another, without question of anything in return. 5 hours ago by @claudiamerrill

The anti-tank No. 74, commonly known as the Sticky bomb. Was a British hand grenade designed and produced during the Second World War. The grenade was one of a number of anti-tank weapons developed for use by the British Army and Home Guard as an ad hoc solution to a lack of sufficient anti-tank guns in the aftermath of the Dunkirk evacuation. Designed by a team from MIR(c) including MajorMillis Jefferis and Stuart Macrae, the grenade consisted of a glass sphere containing an explosive made of nitroglycerin and additives (this added stability to the mix, as well as giving it its squash-head-like effect) covered in a strong adhesive and surrounded by a sheet-metal casing. When the user pulled a pin on the handle of the grenade, the casing would fall away and expose the sticky sphere. Pulling another pin would arm the firing mechanism and the user would then attempt to attach the grenade to an enemy tank or other vehicle. Letting go of the handle would release a lever that would activate a five-second fuse, which would then detonate the nitroglycerin. • 👉 Follow | @heatshells ✅ • Credit: LightningWar1941 Source: Wikipedia.org • #heatshells #heatshellstanks #heatshellsaviation #historical   #war   #axis   #allies #historymemes #historyfacts #historyinpictures #ww2   #worldwar2 #history #stickybomb #grenade 5 hours ago by @heatshells

This is Alexander Hamilton, he was born on January 11, 1757, in Nevis, British West Indies. When Alexander was still an infant, James Hamilton abandoned his family. They struggled to survive. Owing to his intelligence and willingness to work, Alexander Hamilton quickly rose above his station. In the fall of 1773, at age 16, Hamilton entered King's College, which would later be renamed Columbia. George Washington was among those who recognised Hamilton's leadership capabilities. In 1777 Hamilton accepted a position on Washington's staff. Alexander Hamilton served admirably throughout the war. Although Hamilton had little influence on the writing of the Constitution, he was a driving force for its ratification. Upon his election in 1789, George Washington chose Alexander Hamilton as the nation's first Treasury secretary. Hamilton crafted a monetary policy that undoubtedly saved the nation from ruin. Among the features of the Hamilton plan were the payment of federal war bonds, the assumption of state debts by the federal government, and the creation of a mechanism for collecting taxes. During his tenure as Treasury secretary, Hamilton clashed repeatedly with another cabinet member, Thomas Jefferson. Hamilton favored a powerful central government while Jefferson feared it; Hamilton favored closer relations with Britain, and Jefferson, with France. The men would both resign their Cabinet posts before the end of Washington's first term. They would remain lifelong political enemies. Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel. They met on the dueling grounds at Weehawken, New Jersey on July 11, 1804. Both men fired their pistols; only Hamilton was hit. He died of his wounds the next day. #usa #usa 🇺🇸 #exploreusa #history #historylovers #historygeek #historyinpictures #historybuff #historylesson #historyfacts #historygram #historymuseum #historymemes #historynerd #ushistory #instahistory #historymeme #historylover #historyteacher #worldhistory #historyiscool #beautifulphotography #beautifulphoto #beautifulphotographer #photooftheday #photoofthedays #photooftheday 📷 #photooftheday 😊 #agameoftones #historical_compass 6 hours ago by @historical_compass

No longer an acrobat, Polydoor De Baets (Polly Bentos, below) starts performing with René Frans (middle) and Jozef Storms (at the top), all clowns from Gent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ René is the son of Henri Frans, the tutor of Polly. When Polly was 14 years old, Henri discovers him at a local gymnastic club 'Vrijheidsliefde' in Gent. After a year of intense acrobatic training, he takes Polly with his 'Frans Bento Trio' to America, to tour two seasons with Ringling Brothers. So Polly spends basically his teenage years with the Frans family, so he knows René very well. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Jozef Storms is also not a stranger to Polly. They toured for two years with Sarrasani in South-America as acrobats (Otawa Troup) and clowns (Babusio's). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #circushistory #circus #history #circuslife #circusperformer #circusart #circusfreak #historylovers #historygram #historybuff # historynerd #historyinpictures #historyfacts #blackandwhitephotography #blackandwhite #Gent #clown #clowns 6 hours ago by @circus_nomads

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On July 17, 1918, Nicholas II, Alexandra Feodorovna, Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Tsarevich Alexei, along with a few of their family servants, were taken to the basement of Ipatiev House and executed by a firing squad. The world wasn't allowed to know. The bodies were desecrated and buried where no one would find them. Outside countries offered the Imperial Family sanctuary. Lenin and his government let them believe the family was well and safe. Then they changed their story - only the Tsar had been executed, and Alexandra and the children were fine. All the while, the Bolsheviks systematically hunted down every Romanov they could find. Eradication of the Romanov Dynasty was paramount. * * * #tunein #tuneinradio #apple #itunes #history #historyfacts #historylover #historybuff #podcast #podcasting #podcastersofinstagram #podcastlove #podcastaddict #podcaster #historyinpictures #historians #outlandishhistorians #stitcher #instapodcast #historymatters #podcastseries #podcastshow #lovehistory #facts #applepodcasts #googleplay #russianhistory #romanov #romanovs #russia 7 hours ago by @outlandishhistorians

🔶Do you remember this scene?🔶 — This scene is from the mini series known as ‘The Pacific’, and shows US Marines having a little fun torturing a Japanese soldier as he is cut off from retreat. — Notice something. The Japanese soldier, once he knows he cannot retreat to continue fighting the US at a future time, seems to give up and accept his death. However, he was not giving up. He was dying with honor in the eyes of his own culture. — Trained under the ideals of the ancient Samurai Bushido Code of Honor, Japanese troops would rather die than surrender “in shame”. This is why entire Japanese garrisons on islands would often die during a battle rather than surrender to the United States. — They may seem like savages to those of the Western World, but to them, this was the bravest act a man could perform. — #ww2 #wwii #worldwarii #worldwar2 #secondworldwar #instavideo #videoclip #video #thepacific #miniseries #vintage #retro #usmarines #japanesearmy #marines #marine #usmilitary #historychannel #historyclass #history2 #historymemes #historyfacts #historygram #historyinpictures #historyteacher #historylover #historylovers #m1911 #gun #historynerd 7 hours ago by @tegarseptianjawa_s.k.a

Winona Ryder spent part of her childhood – from age seven to 11 – on the Rainbow commune in Mendocino, California. Her parents were “not these crazy hippies,” Ryder once said, but they weren’t exactly white picket fence workaday types either. ⠀ Her dad, Mike, owned a bookstore specializing in books about psychedelic drugs. Her mom, Cindy, made documentaries. Her godfather was Timothy Leary, a drug researcher who advocated for the widespread use of LSD. ⠀ Ryder lived with seven other families on a 300-acre plot of land. There was no electricity, so she would read books by Jane Austen and George Orwell to pass the time. “My parents are like my best friends, really,” she admitted in a 1991 issue of Rolling Stone. ⠀ “We had this relationship where I could talk to them about things that most kids can't talk to their parents about. I would say: ‘What's acid like? Everybody is taking acid in my school. What does it do?’ And they would say, ‘Well, you know, this is the bad side of it.’ They would take all the mystery out of it […] So I'd lose interest. Whereas I have a lot of friends who were just told, ‘No, you can't do that.’ And they're the ones with the problems now.” ⠀ Though she had little exposure to mainstream culture, her mother would screen films in their barn, which gave her an insight into the world of movies. “My mom also had this real passion for old movies,” she told Interview in 2009. ⠀ “She started this film society in Minneapolis with her college boyfriend, so she knew how to run a projector, and when we lived on a commune she would screen these classic movies in this barn on, like, a sheet, and everyone would sit around on backrests and futons. So I loved movies, and she did too.” ⠀ She watched films in the barn, atop an old mattress, starring legends like Bette Davis, Gena Rowlands, Ruth Gordon, and Audrey Hepburn. When she was nine, Ryder saw Ridley Scott’s Alien and was inspired by Sigourney Weaver’s character Ripley. “I wanted to be Ripley. She was the first women's action hero,” she told Vogue in 1996. A year later, in 1997, Ryder would star alongside Weaver in Alien Resurrection. Article wrote by @treytylor 9 hours ago by @historic
On this day July 17th, 1955 Disneyland Park was opened. The idea came when Walt Disney envisioned building a tourist attraction adjacent to his studios. After receiving support from the cannel ABC, the park was constructed and on its opening it turned in to another iconic Disney creation, and the fantasy destination of every child on earth. Among the first guests at Disneyland was the future creator of Star Wars, George Lucas (then 11) and his family. . ⏳⏳⏳⏳⏳⏳⏳⏳⏳⏳⏳ . #history #historybuff #historyinpictures #historystuff #historicevents #historicfacts #disney #onthisdayinhistory #onthisday 10 hours ago by @history_glass

12 hours ago by @as.m_13

The Complex Expedition team made the difficult decision to continue their search for nuclear fuel themselves when it became clear that the reactor vessel was devoid of any, risking their lives climbing into the remains of the reactor from below to assess the situation. И Safeway. И Thrifty Mart». Короче, опыт был. ©Дэнни трехо #historytimes #history #worldhistory #historyinpictures #historyfacts #история #историявфото #историческиефакты #фотоистория #фотофакт #историявлицах #история #мироваяистория 12 hours ago by @timaculov
