Peak 10/40 - Mt. Hallback . Completed 6.6.19 . Day 2, I gingerly stepped out of my Jeep as the sun was starting to come up. I originally planned to camp at commissary ridge, the closest backcountry camping spot to my car, but given the weather, I ended up riding out the whiteout conditions in the back of my Jeep, alone on top of Mt. Mitchell. 🤫 . It was around 6:00 AM and after walking around for a little bit, I decided to lay back down. It would have been easy to just drive home and save the other Black Mountain peaks for another trip. I could have picked any of the abundant excuses that were in my head. I decided to give my body a little more rest and then try to get started again. . I finally hit the trail at 9:30 AM. There are a total of 10 #SB6K peaks in the Black Mountain Range. I had bagged the 6 peaks north of Mt. Mitchell on the first day of the trip, but now it was time to attempt to bag the 3 peaks to the south. . I started at a very slow pace, I was definetly feeling the first day's hike. Mt. Hallback is a little over two miles from Mt. Mitchell and it took me about an hour to make it that distance. Now I had to bushwack up to the top. The line wasn't to difficult to track down and fortunately, this was a much easier bushwach than Gibbs Mountain. . After about 10 minutes, I was standing on top of my 10th peak of this challenge. In that moment, this trek felt exceedingly special. After my first day out there I had every reason to quit and head home, but I decided to get back up and continue my original plan, despite the challenges. I refused to give up and now I was reaping the rewards of that effort. . I took a short break on top and enjoyed that victourious feeling. . Up next, Mt. Gibbes 17 hours ago by @sean_barcy

Wow. Our FREE visit to the galleries @turchincenter in Boone, NC sparked some great conversation with the #artteacherkid today. Everything from artists collaborating, what is a refugee & how the artist portrays them, to how we choose to live our days, oh! And one gallery prompted her to say, “I hope I have a relationship like that one day...” (after learning of husband & wife artists that have been married 50+ years). . Clearly, she gives me so many ideas for how to use this with my students! 19 hours ago by @masoneadventure

I have been in some very challenging backpacking situations, but this was without a doubt one of the toughest. . I stood on the top of Gibbs Mountain wishing I could take a break, but I knew I had to keep moving. I had been wet before I started the bushwack up to the summit, but now I was absolutely drenched thanks to the thick vegetation. . Most people associate hypothermia with winter, but the risk is still there in the summer. During wet and windy conditions, hypothermia can strike at temperatures up to 60 degrees and the temperature that day never got over the mid 50's. . As I made my way south, the rain and wind were relentless. I was beat and struggling to find motivation. My usual strong hiking pace slowed to a crawl and I hadn't been able to take a long break or eat anything substantial the entire day. At this point, if I stopped longer than a couple minutes, I would start shivering. At least that was good motivation to keep moving. . If you've never heard of the quote, "Your body can stand almost anything - It's your mind you have to convince," I can assure you its true. I had to focus on something positive so I thought about one of my favorite quotes from Rocky. . "Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place, and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward." . That quote felt extra appropriate for the situation I was in. Mother Nature had beaten me to my knees, but she was not going to keep me there. No matter how many times I got knocked down, and it was a lot, I was going to get back up. I was going to keep moving forward even if I had to take it inch by inch. . During wet and windy conditions, hypothermia can strike at temperatures up to 60 degrees and the temperature that day never got over the mid 50's. . Thinking of a sunset a few weeks ago. Join us for Trivia this Wednesday and 7pm! Shane promises not to disappoint! Kate Stuke (our veritable Hostess with the Mostess) left us for Oregon last week (bye, felicia), but we've got Shane Gragg stepping up to fill her shoes, and from what we hear, he has big feet (don't read into that one too much). Shane is an App Alum '11 that currently works for App in University Housing. He loves random facts, going down YouTube rabbit holes, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and exploring the High Country! You'll probably see him around campus and Boone with his dog, Little Man. . . . #trivia #summerbeer #getlost #nccraftbeer #ncbeer #appstate #boonenc #exploreboone #thehighcountry #ncbrewery #828isgreat #visitnc #boone #SeekTheSeal #independentbeer #drinklocal #eatlocal #dinelocal #independentrestaurant #localfood 1 day ago by @lostprovince
Peak 9/40 - Gibbs Mountain . It was 1:45 PM and I had finally reached the halfway point of the route. I stood there at the summit of Celo Knob excited and thankful that I was able to make it to my 5th peak of the day despite the tough conditions. The rain was starting to pick back up so I took my phone out to check the weather radar. The excitement I had from reaching Celo quickly turned into a sinking feeling as I tried to shield my phone from the rain. The radar showed a huge storm coming right for me, I was about to be tested like never before. (Picture 3) . My phone was at 15 percent and I knew I had to keep it alive in case I needed to get a call out, it was a bad day to forget the portable charger in the car. My original plan was to eat lunch and take a long break on Celo Knob but the rain forced me to keep moving. I turned my phone on airplane mode, zipped it up in my rain jacket and then quickly descended back down to the Black Mountain Crest Trail. . Once I met up with the trail again, I took off on a furious pace to the south. In about 10 minutes I had made it the 3/4 mile back to Gibbs Mountain. I pulled out my notes to refresh my mind on where the bushwack to the top started. After a few minutes of searching, I was able to track down the large spruce tree that sits directly across the trail from where the bushwack begins. . Without hesitation, I left the trail and started working my way up the mountain (Picture 4). I quickly realized that this peak was not going to come easy. It was an absolute downpour, the wind was whipping, the terrain was steep and the vegetation was so thick I couldn't see more than a couple feet in front of me. I was slipping and falling as I was continuously slapped in the face by wet branches and leaves. (Videos 1 and 2) . Continued in comments ⬇️ 2 days ago by @sean_barcy

I was slipping and falling as I was continuously slapped in the face by wet branches and leaves. (Videos 1 and 2) . Continued in comments ⬇️ 2 days ago by @sean_barcy

(Be sure to swipe. ) While watching the sunrise from Rough Ridge I turned around and saw the most unbelievable rainbow colored clouds spilling over Grandfather Mountain and the Linn Cove Viaduct. The colors and formations changed every few seconds. With the insane winds it was difficult to even hold still to take some of the shots. I did a short video near the end (in my story). 👨‍🌾👩‍🌾We're back for our second installment of Farmer Fridays! 🥕🍅 This week we're giving a shout out to Cory and Jenny Bryk & family (*party of 8, please) and all the other fine folks at New Life Farm! You'll find lots of fresh veg from New Life Farm year round at Lost Province, and these fine folks make it happen. New Life Farm is a first generation family farm dedicated to producing food that is beneficial for people’s health and the environment where the food is produced. The farm is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, between Boone and Lenoir, North Carolina. New Life Farm began operating as a small scale commercial farm in 2012, but its foundation was established years before. What started as our family's means to provide itself with access to fresh, quality, and nutritious food evolved into a farm business that seeks to solve economical, environmental, and social issues through the ethical production of wholesome food. Cory and Jenny met while he was finishing his service in the US Marine Corps and she had just returned from missions work in Thailand. Around this time, he learned the value of eating fresh, local and organic food. Jenny was dedicated to wellness through nutrition and cooking amazing food. However, they couldn’t afford to buy all their groceries from the farmer’s market or health food stores, so they figured that starting a garden would be the most economic way to have access to fresh, organic produce.
