Vermont, Episode III: Drinking the Maté 1. When the map said “Rock Garden”, I expected electric guitars and begonias, or maybe just a crunchier version of Olive Garden, but ended up finding these uniquely stacked white cairns instead. 2. At Clarendon Gorge, the central Vermont incarnation of the Beaver Tram built a dam of our own. If anyone is behind me far enough to check in this, let me know if it’s still there. 3. Sunset from Killington Peak, the first time I’d dipped above 4,000 feet since Virginia. Also, congratulations to whatever couple was getting married nearby. We really wanted your leftover food. 4. The Yellow Deli. The free maté was delicious, the food was outstanding, the hostel was clean and its staff was more than friendly, what’s not to like? I mean, I could see myself staying there again... forever. More maté, anyone? 5. Nightfall in Rutland as fireworks pop in the distance. It’s either the smallest city or the largest town I’ve ever been in, I’m still not sure. Viva Rutvegas. 6. Staying one night at The Yellow Deli was not enough, so why not just go work for them on their organic farm for a day and then stay another night? Lemuel was kind enough to give us a tour, then we had lunch (more maté!) and then got to work weeding a plot of carrots for the rest of the afternoon while many subjects were discussed... 7. I’ll be honest, it was pretty tough not gladly joining that wonderful little cult, especially after a friend of mine joined AND I found out there are kittens. Add that to the maté, and it’s all really tempting... Maybe I’ll swing by Vermont again when I’m done hiking. 8. Sunset from The Lookout, because I take too many sunset pictures. 9. Some of Vermont’s ridiculously tall pines. 10. Drover taking the plunge into the White River, inspiring myself and others to do the same shortly after. #appalachiantrail #appalachiantrail2019 #thruhike #whiteblaze #rutlandvt #rutvegas #killington #whiterivervt #clarendongorge #drinkthemate 11 minutes ago by @itsacakehike

Day 106: Hardest day in NY but we mostly hiked together and spent the day eating dozens of blueberries, searching for water that didn’t come from a stagnant pool, and rock scrambling up, down, and in between every boulder on trail. Don’t worry, Jake is alive and well Day 107-108: Hiker trash take on New York City! We stepped out of our world into one that we all left behind months ago. But you know what?! The time we spent exploring the city sparked a new appreciation for my journey. So thank you big apple. Thank you for food, people, and the extra miles on our ‘rest’ day! Day 109: When we finally returned to trail we hiked through the trail side zoo full of sad animals and exhibits that highlighted things like ferns and poison ivy...! Hit the lowest point on the AT so I guess it will be all uphill from here. And made a quick deli stop before setting up camp in a church field Day 110: A long morning of hiking with very small breaks brought us to the meet up spot for lunch. Quick side trail led us to a lake front with a concession stand! We spent time doing what hikers do. Eating, trying to clean up as much as possible, napping in the strangest places, and attracting all the strange looks from the non hiker trash lake visitors. Hiked on to the next shelter that had very interesting interior decorations! Day 111: Had a great night sleep in the shelters outdoor lawn chair as the temperature finally dropped below 70! Hiked out with Puppet and Honest Abe to make our way to another deli for a mid morning snack. Back to trail but quickly became distracted by a beautiful tree that we just had to climb. Our next stop was Nuclear Lake for a swim! Yogi even inflated his sleeping pad that we used as a float. Last stop was at Dover tree that I couldn’t help but hug Day 112: We were lucky enough to have our pictures taken by a photographer who loves to highlight thru hikers! He even drove us back to trail from the free campsite we utilized in town. A quick few miles and NY was complete as we entered the gateway to New England. Spent the rest of the day with ‘break brigade’ and tried to embrace the slowest pace ever. So slow that headlamps became required...! 13 minutes ago by @meganjoy94

Day 106: Hardest day in NY but we mostly hiked together and spent the day eating dozens of blueberries, searching for water that didn’t come from a stagnant pool, and rock scrambling up, down, and in between every boulder on trail. We were in Vermont visiting family recently and upon getting a little stir crazy in the city, decided to venture out and explore the surrounding mountains. ⛰ Imagine our surprise when we ended up on none other than the Green Mountain National Forest portion of the Appalachian Trail. 🥾 We spent almost our entire trip in those mountains along with the arguably coolest member of the family, @therealaj3. Uncle Alex is a herpetologist and rocked Leo's world teaching him about and showing him how to find all sorts of hidden creatures both in the forest and along the river beds of the AT. 🦎 17 minutes ago by @belovebewild

Day 111: I crave air conditioning. I couldn’t sleep. The temperature felt like it didn’t drop at all with the sun. All night, it was basically as hot as the day, and my tent provided no cooling affect. I kept my doors completely open all night to get any ounce of breeze I could. Which there wasn’t much of. I only felt like I slept as my alarms went off at 5am, for me to start my 19 mile day early. I didn’t even remember them going off, as I woke up from the heat at 8:30am. So that didn’t happen. I still had positive thoughts about doing the whole 19, but it took me a lot of convincing to slip on my still sweat-soaked clothes from yesterday and get going. As I rolled out of my tent, the man I introduced myself to last night, Mike (who was on day 2 of his LASH hike south to Georgia) offered me a cup of espresso. He had along with him about 90 lbs of gear. One of the things he brought was a small cast-iron espresso maker. I tried to offer a friendly tip of instant espresso, but we both agreed fresh brew is something special. I thought we were the only two left in camp, as another man emerged from the edge of the woods. His hammock was camouflaged in the shade the trees were casting. His name was Wiz, and hiked the whole trail last year. We all talked for a while, sharing stories about hostels, favorite parts of the trail, tips for our new friend Mike, and just hiker-chit-chat. I absolutely soak this conversation up, and am really glad I met these two. I looked down at my watch and realized it was almost noon! Shit. There goes my big mile day. I was also procrastinating as the sun was beaming down, and I checked my phone to see the temperature at 101. I did not want to hike.. but alas, I must. I headed out first, and told Wiz I’d hope to see him at the bar/campground up the trail. I wished Mike luck on his hike, and was glad to give him my used AWOL guide, as he only had a roadmap (which don’t show shelter or water locations). I made it to Washington Monument drenched in sweat, and headed for the visitor center. 40 minutes ago by @kate_oliver_

Day 122 - mile 1802. It's been four months since we left Georgia on foot and who would have thought we'd be in the Whites of New Hampshire by now?!?! Today, in the sweltering heat, we climbed Mt. Moosilauke and hit 1800 miles. We have less than 400 miles to go. We'd been warned about lowering daily mileage through the Whites and now we're understanding why, after our first of many big summits. The amount of sweat pouring off me was unfathomable. Radar even saw steam coming off my hat when I stopped for a water break. We're careful to hydrate, rest and take it easy, as needed. We look out on the horizon and see all of mountains that we'll climb. I still can't comprehend how we do it. As we meet more sobo hikers, we're again reminded that there is no cruising to the finish line. It's going to be hard, humbling and rewarding. Just trying to take it day by day and mile by mile. Oh and the last picture was from Lou's in Hanover. Free donuts for thru hikers and a b-squad fave meal spot. . . . . #appalachiantrail #heatwave #thruhiking #hosemedown #itsgettinghotinhere #whitemountains #mtmoosilauke #4months #1800miles #ineedavacation #bsquad #radarandnibbles #babesthathiketogether 1 hour ago by @buffalo.pine

Day 122 - mile 1802. It's been four months since we left Georgia on foot and who would have thought we'd be in the Whites of New Hampshire by now?!?! Today, in the sweltering heat, we climbed Mt. After hiking 3000 feet vertical over 4 miles, we decided to add a few hundred feet more to hit the summit of Mount Lafayette before the 4.8-mile trek down to earth. This is looking from the 5089-foot summit of Mount Lincoln to the 5249-foot summit of Lafayette (4th highest in New Hampshire). Appalachian dreaming. In 2016 I hiked the AT and finished in 91 days. It was an incredible experience! I'd like to try and repeat it some day. I saw someone asking about how they could do a quicker hike, so I compiled a bunch of tips from my hike in a video. You can find a link to that in my profile bio. How to hike the AT in 90 days. I'd recommend going southbound, training hard before you leave, being efficient with town stops, waking up early and hiking into the night, maintaining a steady pace, and carrying a light load!! The photo above is my backpack, with everything I carried during that thru hike next to the southern terminus of the AT. Day 109 | Hiked 5.2 | Mile 1412.4 Had a pretty steamy night last night at Hemlock Springs Campsite, luckily there was a nice breeze to blow around the hot air, 😂. Had a quick 5 miles to the Appalachian Market that was right on trail. They had a deli, pizzeria and resupply food, can’t ask for much more. The deli was on point, had a sausage, egg and cheese between two pancakes with hash browns, yuuuummm. Sat there for about an hour the headed about 0.5 miles to the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center that lets thru hikers camp at the ball field. They have showers, outlets, bathrooms and a pavilion to hang out in, it’s one of the nicer camp spots so far. Meet my first SOBO AT hiker named “Solo”, he started a little over a month ago. We have one more day if this hot humid crap then it’s mud 80’s for the rest of the week. Have a good night everyone. Today was a good day! Why?! Well number one we were hiking on the AT, number two- it’s the longest hike the kids have done at once so far, 6 miles, and number 3 they didn’t complain, whine, or shed a single tear for the first time ever!! I love sharing my passion (obsession) with my family. I can’t wait to see how this little adventure seed sprouts in these little people as they grow up. It’s been such a busy summer, we haven’t gotten to do any overnighters yet with them. Hoping to change that in the next few weeks. #appalachiantrail #wataugalake #hiking #hikingwithkids #tristaradventures #tennesseeadventures #mountains #cherokeenationalforest #raisethemwild #staywild #choosemountains 2 hours ago by @appalachianmeg

I met Poker Face near the NY/CT boarder about 10 days ago. I took several images and all of them with great smiles, so of course I had to ask to see the poker face, and she turned it right on! Poker Face comes from Philadelphia and took to the trail on March 13th for her NOBO thru-hike. Have a great rest of your trek Poker Face! 📸Photos by: @justin_goodhart_photography #appalachiantrail #harlemvalley #hikerportrait #shermanct . . . . . #makeportraits #nobo #trailshoot #makeportraitsnotwar #harlemvalleyatcommunity @harlemvalleyatcommunity #upstateny @appalachiantrail #trailmagic #humansofnewyork #environmentalportrait #neverstopexploring #nikonnofilter #athiker #appalachiantrail2019 #appalachiantrailconservancy #thetrek @appalachianmountainclub @georgiatomaine @appalachian.trail #athiker2019 #atnobo2019 #trektheat #appalachiantrailthruhike #wildeast #ATclassof2019 #hikertrash #whiteblaze #connecticutgram #womenwhohike @naturalconnecticut @connecticutpictures 2 hours ago by @harlemvalleyathp

Mile 0.0 on the Appalachian Trail. Glad to have @madeline_irl here right next to me as we start somewhere around our 2,300th mile together. 2 hours ago by @basteadman
The next few weeks had some of the highest highs, and some of the lowest lows for both me and my good mate Vince. A knee injury was threatening my ability to complete the trail, and stuff happening outside of the trail was weighing real heavy on my mind, but after some rest at Legs house, a quick trip to the White House, the Trail days festival, and countless hours of physiotherapy we pushed all the way to the half way mark, so with blisters on our feet, smiled on our faces, and 2 litres of ice cream in our stomachs, we carried on. It’s only 1800km to go, so why stop now. cheers to my mate @liooski for most of the photography #appalachiantrail #applachian #thruhike #nobo #mcafeeknob #dawn #sunrise #mountains #at #outdoorliving 2 hours ago by @matheson_brown

Day 120 / 17th July It was raining when we broke camp which continued for most of the day. We soon reached Stratton Pond, which would have been a beautiful place to swim in different weather. Heavy rain continued until late afternoon, and we trudged through mud and across slick and slippery rocks. We ended the day by hiking up Bromley Mtn, a ski resort in the season, and the last section of trail took us up a steep ski slope. Here we joined 7 other hikers to sleep in a hut, used by ski patrol in the winter, but left open in the summer for hikers. When we arrived the summit was completely in cloud, but soon the clouds blew away and we were treated to amazing views and a glorious double rainbow. The sunset and sunrise were both incredible and more than made up for all of the rain and mud earlier in the day. These mountains, these views....this is why we hike. #appalachiantrail #atthruhike #appalachiantrail2019 #at2019thruhike #atthruhike2019 #bromleymountain #sunset #sunrise #hiking 2 hours ago by @jenandjamesbosworth

The Great North Walk : Glenrock State Recreation Area conserves over 500 hectares of relatively undisturbed coastal lands in close proximity to the heart of  #NewcastleNSW. We had often driven around it, and peered cautiously over the edge of Scenic Drive, wondering what was in there. Then we found out. We nudged Lola into a tight leafy parking space at the the head of the  #YuelarbahTrack , and after leaping out of her slightly bruised body, fell in love with the place at first sight. The Yuelerbah Track forms a section of the much bigger #GreatNorthWalk , a 250 km  #bushwalkingtrail #fromSydneytoNewcastle  that was initiated by two  #Sidneysiders  who wanted to #takeahike. It was later developed as a celebration of  #AustraliasBicentenary in 1988, and paid for by the government. It is a bit like America's #AppalachianTrail , or Ontario's #BruceTrail , and shorter. Good thing too, 'cause these little legs were the pegs that #hoofedit ! 2 hours ago by @the_surfers_wife

Dirty, hot times out here on the Appalachian Trail... stinky algae mud and sharp rocks dripping with humidity cooking in tight lush quarters with record high humidity and heat... the miles don't come easy but my mind is quiet. I have surrendered to the mountain and have fewer and fewer expectations as the days go on. I'm more focused on what I'm grateful for: cold spring water, refreshing breeze, a shady lunch, food that goes down easily, and legs that keep the miles coming no matter how hot or how hard. . . . #appalachiantrail #womenwhohike #outdoorwomen #hike #camp #altrarunning #backpacker #at2019 #wildernessculture #optoutside #nature 3 hours ago by @marissaneel_az

Day 105 1735.2 to 1748.3 Very early start to try to beat the heat but that didn’t really work. Was glad to be done by 11am. Got into Norwich VT and picked up my new 3rd pair of shoes that should last me till the end. Staying at the new Norwich Hiker Hostel for the night and getting slack packed 20 mi by them tomorrow. 3 hours ago by @akat2019
